The negative effects of abusing drugs:
In 2005, medical attention due to drug misuse or abuse was required for
1,449,154 Americans.
Street drugs with the highest levels of abuse are: methamphetamine, cocaine, and
heroin. Long-term effects of these drugs include: depression, addiction, panic
attacks, stroke, cardiac and neurological problems, heart attack, coma, and
death.
Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem. Excessive abuse of prescription
drugs like: codeine, fentanyl, morphine, oxycodone, and hydrocodone can lead to
prolonged depression, addiction, respiratory depression and arrest, death.
